Significant number of devices restored after massive global IT outage – July 22, 2024
Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike has reported that a significant number of devices affected by a global IT outage on Friday, July 19, 2024, are now back online. The incident, which impacted an estimated 8.5 million computers worldwide and is considered one of the worst IT outages in history, was caused by a faulty security update from CrowdStrike. The company is working to restore all systems and has apologized for the disruption. Major sectors including businesses, banks, hospitals, and airlines were hit hard, with ongoing recovery efforts. The outage highlights the vulnerability of global computer networks, as noted by US Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan. China, which relies less on CrowdStrike and Microsoft, was largely unaffected by the disruption.
